Jamaican Prime Ministers have served collectively for over 50 years. Over that period of time, from 1962 until now (2012), only one (1) female has been awarded the honour of that title. That is our current Prime Minister -
The Most. Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, O.N., M.P.
Since Jamaica gained independence in August 1962 we have seen the likes of nine (9) Prime Ministers. Some would say it is ten (10) because of Norman Manley.
However, Norman Manley was our FIRST and ONLY Premier.
This is because he served from July 1959 to July 1962, which was one month before we gained full independence, (August 1962).
Most
people are only interested in those Prime Ministers serving since
Jamaica's independence, but I have included The Right Excellent Norman
Washington Manley, M.M., Q.C., B.C.L., LLD (Hon.) in the mix because of
his significant contribution to Jamaica before the full independence of
1962.
Here is a list of ALL the Jamaican Prime Ministers from Norman Manley, our first premier, to Portia Simpson-Miller, our present or current leader:
